“I could never become a Christian – after what I’ve done God must be finished with me.” I’ve met a few people who’ve said that to me over the years. Perhaps you have too, or maybe you’ve thought that about yourself. Surely God draws the line somewhere, doesn’t he?
God knows there are times when people find his offer of forgiveness too good to be true. That’s why, when Christianity was first starting, he made a special point of forgiving Christianity’s most violent opponent – the man we now know as St Paul. As he reflected on his own experience, Paul turned it into a classic Christian slogan: “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” (1 Tim 1:15) God wants you to be sure that if he didn’t draw the line at Paul, he won’t draw it at you or me either.
