Abba wrote a song about money – perhaps you’re already playing the glockenspiel introduction in your mind? “In my dreams I have a plan, if I got me a wealthy man, I wouldn’t have to work at all” or “I have to go to Las Vegas or Monaco, and win a fortune in a game.” Inspiring stuff (not). To live well, you can marry wealth or be a successful gambler. I suppose you could try stealing or plain hard work (to be commended), but what happens when you have money? Don’t you just want even more? O to be able to live by the Micawber Principle! (although even David Copperfield could see the misery that came from the prophet’s inability to follow his own advice).

So if wealth isn’t a route to happiness, what is? And how might we use whatever wealth we have (little or large) to help us get there? Jesus said “You cannot serve both God and money” and maybe that is the clue we need. As Jesus answered the tempter: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 6:13)
