In the middle of our Psalm this Sunday, the Psalmist asks a question you may have asked yourself: “What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?” (Psalm 116:12) I hope that’s a question for find understandable. God has done so much for us, he has shown such kindness to us, that it’s natural to ask what we might do for him in response. But, of course, we all know that we could never ‘pay God back’ for his gifts of creation and salvation. Nothing we could ever do for God could possibly come close to equalling what he has done for us.

The Psalmist’s answer begins with a bit of a paradox: “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord” (Psalm 116:13). Having received salvation from God, all the Psalmist can do in return is celebrate that salvation and continue to ask God to save him. The best way to begin responding to God’s salvation is simply to delight in it and to trust him more and more each day to be our Saviour.
