Jesus asked several people “What do you want me to do for you?” (Bartimeaus, Matthew 20:32, Mark 10:51, Luke 18:41; James and John, Mark 10:36). For the blind who wanted to see, he granted their request; for James and John, wanting to be exalted in heaven, the answer was neither yes nor no, but he granted them ‘my cup’ to drink.

Asking God for what he wants to give us seems like a good approach. And, anyway, we probably don’t want something God doesn’t want to give us.

But what about those things that God wants for us that we have no idea about? Could we pray: “Lord, surprise me.” After all, if God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, wouldn’t it be amazing if he did just that?

Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians was that they would be “filled to the measure of all the fulness of God”.
