I was driving home the other evening, and the oncoming car’s lights were far too bright (still on full-bean? or just very bright?). I found it almost impossible to see the road in front of me.

Bright lights are wonderful for being able to see clearly – and the faster you go, the brighter the light you need; but bright lights are also blinding if they are shining at you, rather than at what you are looking at.

God’s light is a bit like that. If we come into the light we see things we couldn’t see before. But we also find it uncomfortable because God’s light shows up our sin for what it is. I might rather stay in the dark. And so, I have to choose: to be in God’s light and have my sin exposed, or to stay out of God’s light and keep myself hidden.

But the real game-changer is that God’s light isn’t spoiled or deterred by my sin – in fact, the opposite happens. God’s light is a purifying light: “if we walk in the light, … the blood of Jesus, … purifies us from all sin”.
