How good is your poker face? I’m sure you will have used one at some point, whether or not it was during a real life game of poker. Though some of us do wear our hearts on our sleeves, all of us have thoughts and feelings which we choose to keep to ourselves.

Indeed, if a person doesn’t say anything (or if what they say isn’t what they really think) it’s impossible to see what’s really in their heart or mind. As Pauls says in our reading today, nobody knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit (1 Cor 2:11).

How much more is this the case with God? Who could possibly guess what is going on in a mind so infinitely greater than our own if he didn’t tell us? So only the Spirit of God knows the depths of God’s thoughts.

That’s one reason we need revelation as well as reason to know God. But Paul says God has done something even better than reveal his thoughts to us, he has given his Spirit to shape our minds until they reflect something of his.
