“I like to see a Bible that’s been well used. If a Bible’s well used, you know the Devil’s not amused.” That’s a line Cliff used in a song I first heard in the 1980s.

So, how well used is your Bible. I know we have access to Bibles on our phones and computers, but there’s still something about a printed Bible, and to sit down quietly and read it – without the distractions of Instant Messaging or The News, and resisting the itch to consult the internet – just to make it you and God, with his word in your hands, and listening to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you.

As article 6 of the Church of England’s 39 articles says: ‘Holy Scriptures containeth all things necessary to salvation’. All we need to know about God is found in the Bible, and that’s why we read it. We want to know about God: who He is, what He has done; and we find that we can know, not just about God, but know God himself, which is the most important thing of all.

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3
