Word for the Week
Born and Born Again
Do you remember when you were born? I don’t think so. Some scientists say 3½, some say 2½ as the age of our earliest memory. Fortunately, you don’t have to remember to know that it happened.
This week, we’re looking at Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3, and Jesus introduces a new idea: Born Again – which Jesus says is essential if we are to see the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus had assumed he could already see the Kingdom of God, so he was confused. Jesus’ explanation raises the stakes: you must be born of the Spirit. Nicodemus realises he is out of his depth and so asks “How?”
Jesus’ answer draws attention to himself: He knows because he came from heaven, and Born Again is about looking to him, believing in him, and receiving the Holy Spirit of God.
Have you been born again? If you have, maybe you remember it. But I hope you can look to the present rather than the past and know because you find the Holy Spirit flowing through you right now. “Whoever believes in me …, rivers of living water will flow from within them. (By this he meant the Spirit)” John 7:38
