    Word for the Week

    • Saved by a Saviour

My car broken down last week. It was my own fault. I knew the battery was going –it had refused to restart a couple of times and bought a new battery – which was sitting in my garage. We went to Studland over the ferry and I turned the engine off in the queue (twice), and again once we had boarded – why waste petrol and make exhaust? But when the car in front drove off, I turned the key and it just went click. The kind man directing traffic called me forward and I shook my head. He mouthed ‘battery’ and I nodded.

20 seconds later, he asked me to pop the bonnet, connected his portable battery and the engine work up and off we went. Saved.

I suppose it must happen often enough that he was prepared.

Who needs a saviour? As it turned out, I did. And there he was.

Jesus told a story about needing a saviour. A sheep that had roamed off and got lost. And there was the Shepherd. Happy ending. “There is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine … who do not need to repent.” Luke 5:7
