We are the Church of England parish of St Mary’s Shaw cum Donnington – just to the north and east of Newbury.
Our purpose and focus is Knowing Jesus, Sharing God’s Love, Caring for People.

- Roots and Wings
Childhood is often described as an idyllic season of play and discovery, adventure and growth. We may of course not have experienced that ourselves! But if we have parental responsibility, I guess that we will aim high for our own children or those we care for, to give them the best possible start as much as we are able. ‘Roots and Wings’, for me are a good description of that, roots of security and wings to fly into the unknown.
Being a child of God, our focus for this Sunday, will have similarities and differences with family life. For a start, our heavenly parent is completely wise and loving! This may not always be evident to us, and we are don’t fully appreciate all the training and opportunities given to us. Nevertheless, our ‘roots’ in God’s gift of security, in being fully known and fully loved as a child of God, plus ‘wings’, set free to become all that he has made us to be, are truly wonderful.
I believe that we put our roots down deeper as we pray and study his word, practicing daily life as a ‘child of God’ under his careful eye; and at the same time embracing his guidance to stretch into the growth that He wants for you and for me, within His loving care for His world and His church.
