Word for the Week
- A fitting TributeMore than three years after her death, the final design for the memorial to Queen Elizabeth II, set to be built in St James’ Park, is still yet to be confirmed. Final confirmation is expected this spring, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of her birth. Why has it taken so long? I’m sure lots of reasons, but one will be that we really want to get this right. Queen Elizabeth lived an extraordinary life of service to our country and we want a memorial which does justice to that life.
Our Old Testament reading this week is one of the Servant Songs from Isaiah. These songs speak of a Servant who, it becomes increasingly clear, is Jesus himself. In this song, God declares that the life of service which the suffering Servant lives needs to be honoured with a greater tribute than merely the end of the Babylonian exile, the problem that Isaiah has mostly been addressing so far. In view of his life and, we later find, his death, God’s salvation must extent to every nation on earth (Isaiah 49:6). This is the heart of the mission of the Gospel. A numberless people drawn from every nation on earth must hear and be saved by Jesus. Nothing less does him justice.Ed
