This week we are welcoming the 1st Newbury Boys’ Brigade Company, to give thanks for the opportunity to partner with them, to pray for them and to dedicate the Company as they make St Mary’s their new home.

The motto of the Boys’ Brigade, “sure & steadfast”, is taken from a verse in the Bible. “We have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul” Heb 6:19a (ESV). It speaks of the way that the hope of eternal life acts as an anchor for our souls – keeping us stable in times of difficulty.

Why is that hope so sure and steadfast? In the verses just before, the writer tells us that God has not only promised to give eternal life to those who trust in Jesus – he’s sworn an oath to do so. Our sure and steadfast hope is grounded in God’s completely trustworthy promises.
